Sleeping Beauty Turquoise

March 06, 2021

One of the most popular opaque gemstones would have to be Turquoise. Most women, at one point in their life, have owned a piece of Turquoise jewelry. Whether or not the stone was natural or synthetic is another debate for another article. Adorning people across the world for centuries, Turquoise is famous for many reasons but most notably for its vivid, sky blue color. Arizona, home to some of the world’s most famous turquoise mines and to the one and only “Sleeping Beauty” mine producing, yup, Sleeping Beauty Turquoise.

Turquoise is a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminum forming through the weathering and oxidation of surrounding minerals. Typically mineralized at shallow depths, turquoise forms in cracks and veins of other rocks. In the case of Sleeping Beauty that host rock is granite. Its structure is cryptocrystalline, forming no definite crystalline shape although it occasionally produces a botryoidal, massive or stalactite form. Intergrowth with other copper minerals is common; Chrysocolla, Malachite, Azurite and Cuprite tend to occur the most, and this is often named ‘Shattuckite’.

Sleeping Beauty Turquoise jewelry specifically, is famous for its rich blue color and smooth vein-free texture. With a MOH’s hardness of 6 it is either polished in its natural pebble state or cut into cabochons. Known to Native Americans as ‘sky stone’, legend states that the tears of joy from the rain flowing into the land mixed with the rich soil of the deserted landscape created this life-giving mineral. Today, this stone is said to help the wearer gain comfort and ease.

Bunny Bedi, owner and designer of Made in Earth, talks about his recent purchase of this sky stone. “The mine itself hasn’t been producing much new material but rather selling off existing stock. Recently it is said to have closed completely and the cost of natural material has sky rocketed. The famous sky-blue Turquoise will definitely be one to hold on to as high grade stones will become increasingly hard to find.”

“Sleeping Beauty Turquoise is devalued with the competing synthetic and imitation material on the market today however I think once people begin to realize the rarity of this stone it may bring a new appreciation.”

Prized throughout the centuries and coveted by the kings of the land, Turquoise has become a household name.
